Adele has been accused of ‘stealing’ a Kurdish singer’s song from 1985
ADELE is being accused of plagiarizing a Kurdish singer on her new song “Million Years Ago”. The guy’s name is Ahmet Kaya, and he put out music in the ’80s and ’90s before passing away in 2000.
“Million Years Ago” sounds a little similar to a song of his called “Acilara Tutunmak”, which he released 20 years ago.
Ahmet’s wife told a Turkish newspaper that she didn’t believe Adele would’ve intentionally stolen the song. But she added, quote, “If she consciously did it, then it would be theft.” Adele hasn’t commented.
To compare the songs for yourself . . . here’s “Million Years Ago”
and “Acilara Tutunmak“: you can skip to about a minute in.
(What do you think? Are the similar parts distinct enough to feel like infringement, or is the melody too generic for that? Of course, all this assumes that Adele and her co-writer have even heard of Ahmet Kaya, which definitely isn’t a slam dunk.)
